The Nickel 3-3 Odd – Nickel Trap is a coverage play that features Cover 2 coverage. It stops short passing routes with four defenders playing zone coverage underneath. It is a good play to use against teams that like to throw quick screens or slants.
The Nickel Trap works by having the free safety and left cornerback drop into a Cover 2 shell. The linebackers drop back in vertical hooks, and the strong safety drops in a curl flat. This leaves the quarterback with confused because of the coverage looks. If he doesn't release the ball quickly, there's a risk of a sack or interception.
The unblocked nickelback creates pressure on the left side of the offense line. Usually gets to quarterback in under 3 seconds.
