4-4 Split

In this Madden Guides breakdown, we look at the 4-4 Split. The 4-4 Split formation is intended to stop the running game to the outside and stop the short passing game. As one might imagine, it’s weak against the vertical passing game. The 4-4 Split uses four down linemen, four linebackers, two CBs, and a safety. By putting eight or nine men in the box, the 4-4 Split defense can shut down most run plays. Stunts are another frequent element of the 4-4 defensive scheme.

A wide range of possible stunts and blitzes packages are possible, you just need to use your imagination to create them.. The 4-4 Split , also known as the “Stack” defense, relies on speed at the linebacker position. They need to be able to go side to side to make tackles while in pursuit. In order to run the 4-4 Split on a regular basis, you need not only fast linebackers, but also shutdown CBs. They will be locked on one on one coverage and will not have help deep. They need top cover skills for the 4-4 Split defense to succeed. If you do not have solid corner backs with cover skills stay away from man coverage and instead run zone coverage.

Strengths:

• Does an excellent job at defending the run.
• Places 8 defenders in the box that are committed to stopping the run.
• Play 1 and 2 Gap control schemes.
• Creates confusion for pass protection schemes as the offense doesn’t know who could be coming.

Weaknesses:

• Can be lit up against spread offenses.
• Needs fast corners who can press on the outside when man coverage is called.
