In this X’s O’s Virtual Playbook breakdown, we take a look at a play we like to call Singleback Doubles RB Scat Texas Hook. This play is designed to attack both man and zone coverage. For the breakdown, we run it against zone coverage.

As you look at the screen, notice the RB (runningback) runs an angle route, he will be the receiver the quarterback looks to throw to if his initial read, which is the Z (flanker) is not open.

Pass Routes

The defensive coverage called is Cover 3 Sky with the strong safety playing the right flat (as you look at the screen) and the free safety playing the deep middle.

In the image, notice the the ball has been thrown to the RB as he breaks over the short middle of the field. The reason he is open is because the right linebacker (Will) drops in a hook zone to the H (slot receiver) and the left linebacker (Sam) drops in a hook zone to cover the Y (tight end).

In the image above, notice how open the RB is as he breaks over the short middle of the field on his angle route.

Video Breakdown

Final Thoughts

For those of you who play video games such as Madden and NCAA, there are several plays in the game that use this concept that can easily be applied to your passing attack.

We take a look at a 46 Normal zone blitz set up that brings inside heat from the left outside linebacker. The name of the blitz is 3 Deep Blitz. This blitz doesn’t require any manual movement and only requires a two pre-snap adjustments

Quick Set Up

Globally re-hot route linebackers to blitz

Re-hot route the right end into a hook zone

Playbooks Found In

4-3

The 46 Normal 3 Deep Blitz by default is designed to stop the inside run, but it can also be set up to bring heat on the quarterback. Notice in the image above that there are only four defenders playing zone coverage by design of the play. We are going to make one pre-snap adjustment that will help improve the coverage a little.

For this breakdown, the offense comes out in the I-Form Pro. All the eligible receivers are running pass routes.

To set the defense up, we globally hot route the linebackers blitz. All their blitz angles are now straight.

Next, we switch to the right end and re-hot route him into a hook zone.

Rather than having one defender (strong safety) dropping into a hook zone, we now have two (,strong safety, right end) dropping into hook zones.

Once the ball is snapped, the left outside linebacker shoots through the A gap between the center and right guard.

The quarterback is sacked for a loss.

Video Breakdown

Final Thoughts

The pass coverages are rather weak, so we understand that blitz can not be run in every situation. The only time we would run it, would be in a third or fourth long situation.
